You have got to give RESPECT to a restaurant that offers fried pork rinds on its buffet. This is not your average bland, tasteless, mass-quantity buffet. Kings Restaurant in Kinston NC affords customers the luxury of a home-cooked meal, at a reasonable price, with fast, friendly service. Kings Restaurant made it into our new favorite things category due to the outstanding, delicious quality of its food. We learned about it while having our starter rebuilt on a recent trip to Kinston NC. After speaking with our server, we discovered…

Food, drink and lodging are three of our favorite things. As we travel and continue our adventure, we want to share honest reviews of places we visit. Too often, finding the best food or lodging requires a knowledge of the destination. When visiting a new place, this information may not be readily available.
Whenever we visit a new place, we immediately begin asking natives questions about what they enjoy in food, drink and lodging. Our favorite places are sometimes the little “hole in the wall” establishments known mostly to locals.
The Reviews
We crave authenticity and value. We expect good service and aspire to locate some of the best places for food, drink and lodging. It is our sincere hope that our reviews will provide our readers with an accounting of what we experienced, and when we experienced it.
Our plan is simple:
- Do our best to not alert an establishment that they are being reviewed. This relieves undo pressure for both the establishment and for us while we review.
- Provide an unbiased and genuine review of our experience
- Document the date and time of our arrival and other useful information, such as how long till we were seated. Other items in the review might
Bacon Jalapeño Cheddar Cream Cheese
Discovered my new favorite thing today at Carolina Bagel Co & Deli in New Bern, NC, in the form of a toasted & buttered Everything Bagel covered with Bacon Jalapeño Cheddar Cream Cheese. We usually elect to have our cream cheese on the side so we can apply it ourselves. But you can see for yourself, this cream cheese is not for the faint of heart. Also pictured is the Carolina Scramble with salsa. You get flavors consisting of a slight Jalapeño spice, TONS of bacon, sharp cheddar and smooth…

Better come early though because they fill up quickly and you may have a few minute wait. Entering the parking lot reveals a steady stream of patrons entering and leaving; a testament to the flavor, service and quality of the experience. We have not had the lunch items yet, but we will soon. They offer a full menu, with breakfast ending at 10:30am. Today we…

There’s a restaurant here in New Bern that has some pretty tasty Dutch potatoes, or as I call it hashbrown casserole. Recently, after a visit to said restaurant, I was reminded just how much our Captain loves this delicious cheesy dish. Without delay, I set out on a mission to replicate it, or at least make something acceptable. After researching several recipes online, I came up with my own version of what I am calling Banjo’s Hashbrown Casserole. To my surprise, the Captain approved, and actually said my hashbrown casserole…

I am often asked since we are currently docked in a marina, and I am not currently working, “What do you do all day?” Well, it depends on the day, but there is always something to do. Some days are cleaning or boat project days, others are shopping or tracking down parts days, but almost every day I dabble in some kind of cooking or baking. Although I am no chef by any stretch of the imagination, I do enjoy to cooking mostly because I enjoy the eating part…
