DIY Diesel Boat Engine Repair: Raw Seawater Pump Video

Raw Seawater Pump Video

This DIY Boat Engine project shows how we remove and re-install our raw seawater pump on an 85-HP Perkins 4.236 Marine Diesel Engine.  As a follow-up video for our Perkins 4.236 Engine Repair: Raw Water Pump Post, we hope you find the video a nice addition to the steps we used. Disclaimer: We are not certified diesel mechanics, so please consult a professional before attempting anything in the video yourself.  Since this was the first time we opened our raw seawater pump, we had a diesel mechanic friend direct us…

Preparation: Removing our Perkins Boat Engine

Removing our Perkins Boat Engine

Today was a busy day.  This morning, we received a knock on the hull and found Gary, one of the Deaton’s Yacht Service employees, requesting to come aboard. We welcomed him and took a couple minutes to listen to his plan for removing our Perkins boat engine. We decided to remove the engine due to finding sea water on top of the pistons and water in our engine oil.  Early in our discussions with the boatyard, I expressed an interest in learning as much as possible about the engine. Perkins 4.236 Marine Engine Mystery Solved

We were fortunate to have had John Deaton from Deatons Yacht Service, come aboard Banjo and perform an inspection of our Perkins marine engine. Marine Diesel Repair: Perkins 4.236 Starter Removal, Rebuild and Re-installation

Perkins 4.236 Starter Removal

We recently attempted to start the 85-hp Perkins 4.236 Marine Diesel Engine on Banjo. As the engine was trying to start, I noticed a puff of white smoke eject from the starter and knew we had damaged the solenoid. Since we hadn’t done any maintenance to the starter, we decided to do a Perkins 4.236 starter removal. From there, we could have it rebuilt at a local specialist then re-install the starter. We hoped, from there,to be back in business. This project took roughly 3.5 hours from start to finish. …

Squires Automotive Auto Generator & Starter Service

There are times when recommendations fall short and times when they blow you away. Yesterday, we experienced the latter at Squires Automotive Auto Generator & Starter Service in Kinston, NC.  The recommendation came from one of the people helping with our engine problem.  We could not have been more thrilled.  So much so, that we have even added them to our new our favorite things category.  I guess when you have been in business serving customers since 1955, you get very good at it. Starter Rebuild Squires Automotive Auto Generator &…
